Nuclear Waste Transport In Germany

This weekend another transport with twelve containers of radioactive waste is going to the small town of Gorleben in the Wendland region, an area well known for 20 years of resistance to nuclear technology. The transport is scheduled to leave the plutonium plant La Hague (France) on Saturday 19, arriving in Gorleben during Monday night. Police announced sending at least 11,000 police -- both local and federal -- into the region.

After the death of one activist during the protests last year, both police and activists expect a more heated up atmosphere this time. As in previous years, there were direct actions against the nuclear in the weeks before the expected transport. In October the accommodation of police troups, more than 100 containers, completely burned down causing damage worth more than 3 million euros; nobody was hurt. It was the most militant act against the transports since activists burned down a whole railway bridge on the way to Gorleben in autumn 2001. This week, anti-nuke activists also destroyed the contact wire of railways in northern Germany by using anchors. Police say they’ve prevented an attempt to undermine a road with water (en) two days ago.

November 19: appr. 4000 people demonstrated in Hitzacker, 30km from Gorleben, a town the transport will pass on Monday. November 18: 600 pupils demonstrated (en) in Lüchow throwing a "rain of eggs" (police) at police forces. Police forces tried to clear the demonstration later injuring several pupils.
